Composite Bonding
Composite bonding is a type of cosmetic dentistry, it is minimally invasive and the least expensive option for making a beautiful smile. It is the application of tooth colored resin composite material which is used to fill a chipped, decayed or discolored teeth. As its name shows, material bonds to the tooth in this procedure.
Dental Bonding is an ideal solution for broken, chipped and stained teeth because it costs less, does not usually need to use anaesthesia and only needs a single visit that lasts for 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. We see patients here at Deans Dental Care who visit us for this treatment alone, It has become a very popular treatment and a big part of our working week.
Things to Consider about Composite Bonding
Before you decide to have composite bonding, be sure to do your research and choose a dentist who is experienced with the procedure, as dental bonding requires some artistic skill to get the best cosmetic results. Ask for “before and after” images of patients who have undergone Composite bonding.
The bonding treatment is not suitable in every situation but it can be a quick, painless and affordable way to enhance your smile. When you feel good about the appearance of your teeth, it can help you maintain good oral health.
Procedure
After having your consultation, dental bonding is usually done in one session. First your dentist uses the shade guide to find the shade matches that are closest to your teeth. The teeth are then roughened in order to stick the resin material and apply a conditioning liquid to clean the tooth surface. Next your dentist applies the resin material and starts to mold and smooth to the desired shape on the tooth. After that the resin will be hardened by a special light that bonds the material to the tooth’s surface. At the end your dentist will fit, shape and polish the bonded substance to match the shine of other teeth.
Aftercare Instructions
Dental Bonding is more prone to staining and chipping unlike other treatments. That is why basic aftercare is needed so you can keep your bonded teeth looking natural and glossy. Here are some tips to keep your bonded teeth in good condition:
Brushing – Brush your teeth in the morning and once at night. Use toothpaste that contains fluoride and replace your soft headed toothbrush every 3 to 4 months to guarantee that your teeth are properly cleaned.
Flossing – when you floss your teeth, bring the floss up to the gum line and completely remove all plaque before you proceed to the next tooth.
Drinking water after every meal – when you drink water after meals, you keep your mouth clean and healthy as water will help flush out food debris and lessen acidity levels in your mouth.
Things that stain teeth – use of tobacco products like chewing tobacco or cigarettes causes yellow stains on your natural teeth and bonded teeth. Foods and drinks such as tea, red wine, juices coffee, and candies with artificial colouring can also stain the teeth. If you smoke, this is a good reason to quit. If you often drink red wine, coffee or other foods with dark colours, cut down on these types of foods.
Habits that wear down the composite resin – biting on fingernails or pens and on other objects can wear down the bonding material and enamel over time. The composite resin can easily chip, so it’s best to avoid such activities.
